[Oh look, it's the loud boy from yesterday... only this time he's wearing a (slightly) embarrassed grin and waving at the video pickup.]

Hello! I'm Gon Freecss! It's nice to meet you!

[--and bowing, deeply, for a second before he bounces back to vertical.] I'm really sorry I yelled at everybody yesterday! [And really glad everybody but Killua just heard him over the phone, so he didn't hurt anyone, because that would have been really bad...]

I understand about this place now, so don't worry. But I wanted to ask if anybody could tell me more. About the animals here, or the Animus, or anything!

Oh boy he hopes that makes up for it. He doesn't even know who that girl was who sounded really scared.... quickly, he grins at the video pickup, and cuts the feed.]

[Um... okay, he's got a lot of questions, but some things he wants to explore on his own, and--] What do you think is the most important thing to know?

Except that it's hard to go home. I know that.

As you like, Gon.

[She nods in acknowledgment.]

Then please, call me Juliet.

[The question gives her pause, and she takes a moment to think.]

The most important thing.... To me, it is that there is always someone here on whom you may rely. Should you ever need help, there will be one of us who comes to your aid. There are so many kind people here, so many willing to reach out to those in similar circumstance. Nothing is truly hopeless here, so long as there is even one kind soul who offers aid.

[That's not really what he meant. He's looking blank for a few seconds.

--but then he smiles brightly.]

That's good!

But I mean about the city.

[But...to her, that is what is most important about the city. She takes another moment to consider his question.]

I suppose the other side to my words is also of import. The Animus can be very cruel, and will take away those for whom you care, and those for whom you come to care, on a whim. They may return those people to you after a time, but they will not be as they were before. We none of us are truly safe from their caprice.

[Her expression grows somber as she speaks, the faces of those she's lost swimming before her mind's eye.]

[He swallows, looking down. Then back up.]

Not as they were... what happens to them?

They forget the time that they have spent with us. It is as if they were never here in the first place.

But they're still the same otherwise, right?

They just forget?

It depends. Sometimes, the Animus bring them back from a time earlier or later than they had been previously. So they may be different.

Different because that's the way they were back home then.

Right?

Yes. Or - different because they - they were not at home, but beyond it.

What does that mean?

[Sorry, Juliet: elegant phrasing goes waaaay over his head.]

That they had gone to be with the Lord. They had died before they arrived to this place.

And they come back to life?

In this place? Yes, they are alive as they were at home before they had died.

[Thinking about that for a moment.]

How?

I know not, in truth. I only know it happens. There was a man here who was like to a brother to me. He was dead at home. He remembered dying, and then being here, in the city.

[At least Spike's story has a happier ending than her poor Tybalt's.]

That's... Isn't that a good thing, though?

That some people get to come back?

It is. It is a wonderful thing. Perhaps the best thing in the world.

[She smiles for a moment before her face falls.]

Until the Animus take them away again.

[They go back to the moment they left, and no one notices the difference...

That must mean that they die again. Gon swallows, thinking.]

It is not an easy truth to accept. It is made worse with the differences in time the Animus use.

That's one more reason to find out how to go home... right?

Because if we can control that, then the people who want to stay here still can.

[She manages a smile.]

Indeed, good sir. That would be most helpful. It would also be helpful to offer those who had been here a chance to return, should they wish it, or to bring those whom we love here with us. It will take people cleverer than I to determine that sort of thing, though.

I don't understand it yet, but I know we'll find a way!

I would be most glad if such a thing could be done.

[Nodding.]
